Setting Goals in Your Business

It’s a new year and you’re ready to hit the ground running in your business or personal life. I hear that! As soon as the holiday’s wrap up and a new year looms around the corner, I always get a sense of clarity and excitement for new and fresh beginnings. There’s something to be said about a fresh start and come January 1, you are granted that, every year.

As 2022 came to an end, my business slowed to an almost halt. It was terrifying. Here I am starting in my first official year of business and all of a sudden…crickets. The perks of being an entrepreneur is learning that your business will go through cycles and waves throughout the year and you can’t expect when - but you better be prepared. I used the extra time to work on what I really needed to focus on in my business to bring awareness and attraction. This is crucial and should be looked at within your business year after year, because times change and you must change with them!

So, with taking a good hard look at what was and was not working for me, I was ready to hit the ground running even faster.

If you’re reading this and you own a business or have been in the room with decision makers setting goals, you have more than likely heard about the S.M.A.R.T. goals acronym. During this past year, I have been enrolled in a course all about getting the systems set up and in place for my design business and my incredible teacher (check her out here) took this simple acronym a step further: S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Goals. Let’s break them down.

S: SPECIFIC

Make a very specific goal, don’t be too broad with it.

M: MEASURABLE

How will you measure this goal?

A: ATTAINABLE

Is this something that is reachable? Make sure it is something that you know you can achieve.

R: RELEVANT

Your goal should be relevant to your business and its’ growth!

T: TIMEBOUND

There needs to be a deadline for your goal.

E: EXCITED

Your goals should make you excited and eager to work towards them!

R: REWARD or REVISE

How will you reward yourself when your goal is reached? Or how will you revise?

With all that to say, start drafting those YEARLY goals! What do you want your life to look like?

Next, narrow down into your quarterly goals. How many projects do you need to take on each quarter in order to reach your income goal? What are some quick wins that you can achieve? Quick Wins being something that requires low effort, but will result in high impact.

How do you plan your year? I’d love to bounce ideas back and forth! I’m always on the other end of my email :)
